Autumn 2020
This quarter, I applied for and got into the biochemistry major! Since I plan on researching biochemical oceanography, I am excited to take this next step in my academic career. I have really enjoyed learning about biology and chemistry, so I am looking forward to continuing to learn in these fields, as well as the field of biochemistry. I'm sure I have a rewarding path ahead of me, and I will make sure to work hard along the way.

For my HONORS course this quarter, I took a class titled "Prison Logics and Abolition Futures". In the course, one of the things we talked about was immigration law and processes of exclusion, and for this section of class I traveled to the Tacoma Chinese Reconciliation Park. While I had visited the park before, I found it really impactful being there with the purpose of learning and really thinking about the meaning of the park. It was the first time that I took the time to really read the plaques and reflect on the history of the area, especially as someone of Chinese descent. While I felt sad reading about the injustices against my people and I think it’s striking that the Chinese exclusion that took place was only recognized by the city over 100 years later, I know that this park is here as an acknowledgment of what was done and is a step to heal and prevent future events of hatred against people of color.

For my OCEAN 210 class, I had the opportunity to attend some of the Banse Seminars about oceanographic research for extra credit. This quarter, the series is focused on highlighting underrepresented researchers in oceanography. I thought it was inspiring to be able to see women of color like me presenting the super interesting research they have done! This photo is an excerpt of my notes from the second seminar I went to. The seminar was by Dr. Allison Moreno, a Postdoctoral researcher at UCLA. She talked about ocean oxygen and carbon cycling, and as someone who wants to study biochemical oceanography, it was a wonderful seminar to attend!

This quarter, I joined the Mayor's Youth Commission of Tacoma, where I live. I am on the Environmental Committee, and this is the cover of a social media post I made as part of a campaign to educate other young people about current environmental issues. I wrote it about ocean acidification, which is something that I have learned a lot about in my oceanography courses. At the end of the week of posts, we had a small event where we did a trivia game to see what people learned.
